Home Security Equipment

Home security is something that should be done as soon as you think of it and should not be put aside for another day. That other day may be too late. Burglary is not a random act but a well though out crime. A burglar will watch a home to see when the family goes to work and school, checks to see what areas are well covered by shrubs and/or trees, which doors leading to the house are most vulnerable and when the time is right the burglar strikes. Incidentally, if you have an attached garage, the most vulnerable doors leading to the house are the garage doors. Therefore, they should be reinforced so that they cannot be easily opened. Another vulnerable area around your home are canopies over the door where a burglar can work slowly because he will not be seen as the awning and canopies protect him.

The most important home security equipment starts with the doors. Solid wood doors, hollow core metal doors, ornamental doors and screens, all add to the protection of the home. But they need the proper locks. A good dead bolt lock is good especially when it is backed with a knob lock. The door should be flush with the frame in order to keep burglary tools and credit cards from opening the lock. The frame of the door should be metal as a wooden frame can break if kicked in. For additional security when you are in the house, a chain lock or a slide lock on the doors will keep a burglar out.

If you want to add additional security to your house and the surrounding area you can install security cameras, also known as surveillance equipment. There are many cameras to choose from. You can have a camera that will record the activity in and around the house on a DVR which can be played back later on your television set. There are cameras that are motion sensitive and will sound an alarm when there is activity within its space and will additionally turn on bright lights or strobe lights. If you want truly high technology, there are cameras that will alert you to any unsavory activity in and around your home by calling your cell phone when you are away. You can then call the authorities and they may be able to catch the thief(ves) in action.

If you have an idea of the type of security equipment you want to protect you home, and you cannot find it already made up, you can buy the separate pieces of equipment and do it all yourself. You can also buy a do-it-yourself home surveillance kit.

Good home security equipment will protect your home and all of you belongings. But, you have to do a few things to help the system to work. Be sure that shrubs and trees are trimmed so that no one can hide in them. If you have an awning or canopy over your door be sure it is not flush against a wall and that all parts within it are visible. If you are a person that does the same thing every day when you leave the house, then change your routine often. Be sure all doors and windows are locked when you leave and teach the children to do the same thing when they leave the house. With good home security equipment and caution you will have nothing to worry about.
