Home Security Doors

Burglary is the most common threat to the home. In a recent FBI report it stated that a burglary occurs every 15.4 seconds somewhere in the United States. Burglaries are non-confrontational and generally occur when no one is at home and there is easy access to the house. They further state that most of the burglaries are committed in the months of July and August when people are away on vacations or taking part in summer activities away from their homes. The month with the least burglaries is February.

Burglars are usually under the age of twenty five and they look for items that are small and easy to sell for quick cash. They like to take cash, jewelry, guns, watches, lap top computers, VCR’s and small electronic devices. They prefer to gain access to your home through and open door or window or a door or window that can be easily opened without using force. Police can very rarely catch the thief in the act and for that reason only about thirteen percent of the reported burglaries can be closed successfully.

Burglaries are very seldom random as the burglar will select a home that is unoccupied because the family is either at work and school or away vacationing. They choose a home that is easiest to access, one with trees and shrubs for cover as well as a good escape route.

As we mentioned, one of the best ways for the burglar to enter the premises is through a door that may look easy to open. To deter the burglar you may want to consider an iron ornamental entry way door or screen door. They are beautifully made and in most cases you can have it made to your own design. You might also consider a solid metal door with a metal door jamb. Door jambs are too easily kicked in or pushed in allowing the burglar free entry.

If the ornamental doors are not for you than consider strengthening your existing doors or replacing them with hard core wooden doors or hollow metal doors. These are strong and difficult to get into. Take the time to be sure you have the proper type of locks. The best investment is door locks is the dead bolt lock which is the most difficult to open without a proper key. Be sure the doors fit snugly so that the burglar cannot use a tool or credit card to open the door.

When you are at home be sure the doors are locked so that no one can surprise you by entering without your knowledge. The best way to do this is with a chain lock. If you have a strong door the chain lock cannot be forced open. If you prefer, you can use a slide lock on the inside of the door.

Patio doors can be made safe by inserting a stick or cut down broom handle in the track to deter any movement. Some of the older patio doors can be removed by lifting them off the track. This can be remedied by having a professional install the necessary hardware to keep the door from being lifted off the track.
